Are there signs of a crisis on the horizon between Renault and Nissan?

Lawyers for French carmaker Renault have criticized their Japanese alliance partner Nissan for its handling of an internal probe into the Carlos Ghosn case, a Sunday newspaper has reported.

For the first time since the media reported the arrest of Carlos Sun and Japan, French Renault has remained silent.

But this time Renault’s lawyers in a letter to Nissan dated January 19, said they had “serious concerns about the methods used” by the company and its legal team, including the way they treated some Renault employees, according to France’s Le Journal.

The 10-page paper, sent by Ken, Emmanuel, Orcohart, and Sullivan, to their counterparts at Nissan’s Latham & Watkins office.

Former head of the alliance Ghosn is being held in Japan on charges he under-reported millions of dollars in pay as head of Nissan.

“Renault has gathered sufficient evidence to understand and regret the methods used by Nissan and its lawyers to seek interviews with Renault employees through the Japanese public prosecutor’s office,” they said.

Nissan’s lawyers also “tried to search apartments” former Renault Alliance president Nissan “in Brazil, Lebanon and the Netherlands without informing Renault,” the newspaper said, quoting the letter, condemning “these abuses.”

Carlos Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo on November 19 while in detention in Japan on suspicion of using trust and not declaring earnings in his statements to the stock exchange authorities from 2010 to 2018.

Ghosn, who has been Renault’s president since 2005, resigned from the post at the end of January. He was sacked from Nissan and Mitsubishi after revealing this information.
